Purpose and Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose of this web site is to provide an independent communications center for the San Diego lesbian community that is self-generated and as self-policed as possible. With this communications center, we hope that the often heard "If only I had known...." comment will become a thing of the past. We hope this site can provide all the information we need as a community to stay connected and informed.

A major (and fairly unique) feature of this site is that it is completely built by you! All registered members have the capability to directly post information to the site, without going though a webmaster or other official. And you completely control the information you do post. You can modify it or delete it at any time. There are no fees involved. You are welcome (and encouraged!) to post as much information as you wish.

By letting you have complete control over the content you post (within accepted guidelines - see below), we are providing a site that does not cater to any one organization or individual. This truly makes this an independent site built by the members of the community it serves.

The Community

This site is intended for the lesbian community in San Diego. All material posted on this site should be "of interest" to this community.

Does this mean that only lesbians can register and participate? We want to be inclusive, yet we also want a site that has the concerns of lesbians as its primary purpose. With this in mind, we are welcoming anyone to register who has information that meets this criteria. There will be no litmus test of your gender or sexual orientation.

Please be advised, however, that information that is not appropriate to our community can and probably will be removed. See the guidelines below.

Guidelines

Because this is a public site and the content is of restricted interest to the lesbian community, it is necessary to monitor the appropriateness of posted information. You can read our "official" guidelines in the Terms of Agreement. In general, our requirements follow accepted Internet standards and can be summarized as follows:

  • No sexually explicit material will be accepted.
  • No material endorsing or promoting violence/agression will be accepted.
  • All posted links to other sites must contain a truthful statement indicating the content of the web site.

We have a voluntary advisory board of no fewer than five women who have the ultimate say on the appropriateness of posted material. Their word will be final. If you are interested in being on this board, please contact support@sdwomyn.com.

We do encourage active discussion on all such issues via the Discussion Forums, so feel free to voice your opinion. Our advisory board will take all such discussions into consideration.

Privacy

Privacy is a big issue on public sites. Is your information safe with us? Read our Privacy Agreement for full details. This site has been designed with the protection of your personal information as a major factor. We only display personal information to the public that you yourself have approved. With the exception of your screen name, all other entered information about yourself can be made private. It is absolutely forbidden for any persons involved in the running of this site to sell, give away, display, or otherwise be made known, any information you deem as "private".

Behind the Scene

This site was developed using the Merlin Internet application tools, developed by Kit Gateley, president and software developer of Cykic Software, Inc. It is being hosted by Cykic in a secure hosting center (www.castleaccess.com) as a community service. There are no fees involved in maintaining this site and therefore no paid advertising.

This site could not have happened had it not been for the enthusiasm of Masa Goetz, Lois Gail, the advisory board, and the LOFTY women.
